It falls unto you to restore it to defeat its enemies, and restore it to its former glory! Despites its setbacks, the Byzantine Empire still retains enough strength to bounce back from its current predicament. However, an empire in decline is an opportunity for the player. People will find that playing this faction will offer a challenging start, beset from all sides with limited resources. Not to mention that in its current state, the Byzantine Empire is a shadow of its former self lacking the power, influence and territory that it once held. Just like its historical counterpart, this means that it’s often vulnerable to attacks from either side. Obviously factions that will battle mostly on forest maps won't profit as much as factions on plains or desert.Located in Anatolia, the Byzantine Empire acts as the gateway between the eastern and western regions of the map. Personally, I would probably look for a faction with high damage artillery pieces, strong spear+shield infantry to play battles defensively with, possibly heavy cav to counter AI light cav assaults on exposed artillery. What factions, tech-wise and gameplay-wise, would profit most from arty? How would you use them most effectively in battle? Would you research siege tech, which I never do? What's your take on artillery in Rome 2?

So now I was thinking about really focusing on artillery with my next campaign and get some input from you guys. And even though their damage is on the lower side compared to other factions and I didn't invest any research (not even ammunition I believe) those 2 ballistas usually wipe out 1-2 units each if I count together the numbers, more than my elite infantry on average. In Rome 2 I usually run 2 ballistas per stack and have done so with Parthia, the Iceni and now the Suebi. Which makes sense considering the game covers that historical period when field artillery first became a central element of every battle. I started using it heavily the first time during Stainless Steel campaigns and in Empire (and I believe Napoleon as well, didn't like it) the potential of arty became very obvious.
